Turning Japanese

The worst part about being pregnant (aside from the morning sickness, weight gain and not being able to go clubbing), is not being able to eat any sushi! I just love Japanese and can eat it everyday. But when I was pregnant, I was forced to stay away from raw food (that also includes oysters, soft cheese, alcohol... and the list goes on!). That really sucked! I occasionally ordered cooked maki like Tempura Rolls or Soft Shell Crab Rolls from Sushi Kuu in Wellington St. but that didn't satisfy my craving.

Now that I am no longer preggy, I have my regular dose of Japanese. My favorite Japanese restos in Hong Kong are Sushi Kuu, Kyoto and Tokyo Joe in Lan Kwai Fong, Zuma and this small place in Mong Kok. I tried the Todai buffet in Tsimshatsui but the quality is so much better in Los Angeles. I have yet to try Nobu (yeah am such a loser for not eating there yet) at Intercon.

When I was living in Manila, I was addicted to Kai and would eat there at least once a week (the chef was also my best friend, how convenient!). So during my last trip to Manila, I made sure I ate my favorite Wasabi Oysters and Salmon and Cream Cheese roll. Kai just moved to Greenbelt 5 and expanded their menu. Too bad I wasn't able to try the new stuff! Oh well, there's always next time.

Now that I am back in Hong Kong, I don't know any resto serving salmon and cream cheese rolls. Due to my desperation, I went down to Park and Shop and got some salmon maki, and mixed it with some Australian cream cheese with garlic and chives. Tada! My own maki! Of course it is not as yummy but it is definitely better than the plain one from the grocery. Maybe I should start learning how to make sushi. That would be perfect! Too bad baby cannot have it for dinner...
