Pump Up the Jam

To breastfeed or not to breastfeed, that is the question! I think every mom prefers to give their babies their own milk. The problem is not all moms are comfortable with it. Not only could it be painful sometimes, it also means not eating certain food and definitely not drinking any alcohol. Plus, that also means waking up every 2 hours at night to feed your baby. I guess sacrifice is what motherhood is all about (duh!).

In my case, I had to give up breastfeeding after nearly 2 months. I had to go back to work and I didn't want to be secretly pumping my breasts in the office in between client calls and neither can I afford having milk dripping from my blouse during my presentations. Besides, I was not breastfed as a child and I think I came out pretty okay. I don't mean to justify and I definitely applaud the moms who breastfeed as much as they can.

The next question is what pump to get. I remember getting Avent manual breast pump. I think that worked well. I never tried the automatic breast pump so it would be difficult to compare. All I remember is that I felt like a human cow... and that it hurt. I bought those nipple shields from Chicco that were useless and used Lanolin creams that didn't work for me.

Breastfeeding is an art and for those who are not good at it should consider going to a lactaction consultant (I never knew there was such a thing before I was pregnant). I also remember when I was breastfeeding at IFC mall, my husband had to tell this peeping tom of a guy to stop staring. I wish I knew about Bebe Au Lait (which is highly recommended by a friend) that makes fashionable nursing covers. Check out their website at www.bebeaulait.com. They also have a product line called call Hooter Hiders! That cracks me up! But, I must admit that I'd rather have a Hooter Hider than someone ogling at my breasts. Ugh!
