Push It Real Good

A friend of mine told me about the news in the papers yesterday. Richard Li, grandson of the great Li Ka Shing (wealthiest businessmen in Hong Kong) just gave his girlfriend a castle for giving birth to a baby boy. What did she just say? A castle?! That is so not fair. How can a 21 year-old receive a castle for bearing a child? Aren't we are supposed to be in a recession right now? What makes me more envious is I met her last year when we did a photoshoot for a magazine cover. She seemed so young and innocent then, and looked far from being pregnant. Oh well, some girls have all the luck!

For all pregnant women who have not yet given birth, I suggest you push it good ala Salt n Pepa for a nice push present. Or if still single, make sure you find someone who can give you a good push. Who knows you might just get yourself a castle!

Made in Hollywood

Thanks to Katie Cruise, Jessica Alba and Gwyneth Paltrow, becoming a mom is now a fashionable thing! Going to the park with baby, wearing the Baby Bjorn carrier and carrying the Tod's Pashmy diaper bag is IN. Babies are the new accessory! And, everyone in Hollywood seems to be following the trend. If you are expecting, find out which celeb baby is gonna have the same birthday as yours this year...

Heidi Klum and Seal
Project Runway's Heidi Klum is expecting her fourth baby with hubby Seal. At the moment, they have 2 boys and one girl already (Seal is the adoptive father of Heidi's daughter Leni). Now that's another baby in couture coming up...

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze
Famous for TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah and hubby Freddie Prinze (whom she met on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer) are expecting their first child. Hmm, I hope baby doesn't look like a vampire nor Scooby Doo!

Nicole Richie and Joel Madden
Guess who's having her second already? Socialite/actress Nicole Richie and band singer hubby Joel Madden. Boy, they really are starting a family! If only all moms' bodies are like Nicole's, then maybe moms won't mind going for seconds right away. I'm just looking forward to seeing her nice preggy outfits again! Wonder if she will push through with her own maternity line...

For a longer list of celebs expecting storks, visit iVillage entertainment... I wonder who would be the next baby fashion icon after Suri!

Buy the Book

After the success of her entertaining memoir, STORI Telling, Tori Spelling is coming out with another entertaining book, Mommywood. Tori struggles to give her children a "normal" life, one she did not have when she was growing up. Read about what it's like bringing up children while everyone is watching.

I'm not a fan of Tori, and didn't like her in the ol' Beverly Hills 90210 (or any of her films for that matter) but am curious about what it's like to be a Hollywood Mom. I wish Gwyneth Paltrow or Sarah Jessica Parker had their own books. Not sure if I'd want to read Katie Holmes-Cruise's... and would definitely not read Victoria Beckham's if she came out with one.

Apparently, Michelle Obama also has her own book called Mom-in-Chief and Sarah Palin has Sarah: How a Hockey Mom turned Alaska's Political Establishment Upside Down. Hmm... I don't really like these political propagandas so these two books are definitely not part of my shopping list.

MommyWood will be available on April 14th, but you can pre-order this book at Barnes and Noble or Amazon.

Second Hand Frenzy

Do you mind if your baby is wearing hand- me downs? As long as it is in good shape and you know the person giving them, I don't think there is anything wrong with it. Now that there's a global recession, we have to be wise about our spending habits (wait, is that me talking?). We can save the money spent on baby and use it for ourselves... kidding!

But, what if the stuff were formerly owned by celebrity babies? Now, that's a different story! Good news! Nicole Richie is donating baby Harlow's stuff for a charity auction. Donations will proceed to go to the Richie- Madden Foundation (that means it goes back to Nicole and Joel?). If interested, visit handmedowns.com and bid while you still have time! There's still a chance to win Harlow's Lacoste Maclaren (with Mommy's signature), Gymboree romper, and Stride Rite mary janes. I personally like the navy dress. Cutie!

News is Angelina Jolie will be donating her baby's stuff next. Umm which baby? Watch out!

Just got an email from Gwyneth Paltrow's site, GOOP, that she (not for baby this time) is having her stuff up for auction too and they are all brand new. Oh my! She's got everything from Chanel, Jimmy Choo, Balenciaga, Tod's... name it! Am getting palpitations while I am bidding for the Celine boogie bag. The Smythson bag is not bad either. Good thing Gwyneth and I don't have the same shoe size!

Body-licious

Just saw Jessica Alba's cover of Elle UK for March (yes, yes... I'm a bit too late, it's already April!) She is looking HOT! When did she give birth again? It could be photoshop but still... Gotta buy this mag and read about how she got her body back for some tips.

If we are talking about yumeemommies,I guess there's nobody like Madonna. She made a great comeback with this LV campaign (don't like the bag though!) How old is Madonna now? Who cares? Look at those legs! Some girls have all the luck! Let's just not talk about the divorce... and the adoption for that matter.

But, personally, no one beats four- time gold medalist, Dara Torres. She is not only the oldest olympian at 41 but also mother of 3 year old- Tessa. Dig those abs... there's still hope for moi!

Hmm... I think I need to start swimming in the pool downstairs when baby is asleep. Good time to wear my one-piece Dior suit I got at the sample sale- ha! And now that it's lenten season, perhaps I can sacrifice chocolates, ice cream, baguette and cheese! Let's see how long I'll last.

Happy Hermes Day!

Mother's day is coming up... This holiday makes more sense now that I am a mom too. Oh, the woes and sacrifices moms make for their children and husbands! Can you tell that I am being overly dramatic? Just testing if this works and I get a mother's day present.

All moms would dream of owning a Kelly. Or a Lindy. In my case, I'd be happy with a Kelly long wallet. Isn't this a beauty? I think I need to wake up from my dream...

Okay, if I want to be realistic, maybe at least an Hermes bracelet watch? It's not exactly new but I find it cute with a white tailored shirt and denims.

No matter how nice the Hermes scarves are, I am just not the type who wears scarves if it ain't winter. Their clothes are looking really hot this spring/summer though. Bravo John Paul Gaultier!

Sigh... don't you wish you were Katie and Suri! A shopping trip to Hermes is a bonding session between mother and daughter.

What do you want for Mother's day? I'll go and slip a note to your husband...

Star Struck!

There's no one like Carrie! Nope, I'm not talking about me, am talking about my namesake- Carrie Bradshaw, or better known as Sarah Jessica Parker. I idolized her so much in Sex and the City that I imbibed her lifestyle. Let's not go there! Anyway, after seeing this pic of her and baby James, I am determined I want a photoshoot of me and my daughter while she is still a baby... (she is growing up too fast and turning a year old in 9 days!)

or maybe a family pic of the three of us ala Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes Cruise and baby Suri?

Now, that's a good reason for me to start losing weight (or there's always Photoshop)! Need to go on ocular inspection soon for a good location (preferably a beach with some rocks according to hubby, my photographer). How I wish I can just pull out clothes as if it were a real shoot...oh well, I won't fit into the sample sizes anyway. I need a mother and daughter outfit soon. Help!

Too bad I can't sell my baby photos ala J.Lo for a whopping $6M and we are not Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (Knox and Vivienne 's photos were worth US$14M!). That would be more than enough for our Hermes bags... maybe in another lifetime!

Gwyneth Paltrow Tells All

I am so happy my best friends are reading my blog (even if some don't have kids yet...I promise to have a section for you non-moms soon. Watch Out!) One of them told me about Gwyneth Paltrow's website, Goop. Even if Gwyneth was not behind this site, I would totally subscribe to it. She has fresh ideas, heart-warming advice and good recommendations.

Please read about some articles she posted on chemicals and toxins that are harmful for baby. Alarming!

1.Chemicals in Everyday Products and Children’s Health: A Small Dose of the Facts
By Philip J. Landrigan, MD

Has information about asthma, cancer, leukemia, ADHD, dyslexia, birth defects, autism, obesity and diabetes, linked to the products we use, food we eat, environment we live in.

2. Top 10 Easy and Affordable Steps to Creating a Healthier and Nontoxic Life
By Christopher Gavigan

Since there is no link, I just pasted the whole article so read on:

It’s hard to get those recommended seven to eight hours of sleep a night. Five days of exercise would be the greatest luxury. Your leisure reading pile consists of books like Goodnight Moon and Pat the Bunny. But your sacrifice is for the best smile and hug in the world – from your child. Welcome to parenthood.

Yet, we are a new generation of parents. We strap helmets on our kids as they skateboard and bike, we strain our necks putting on outlet covers, but there are new realities when it comes to keeping your children safe and healthy. Parents are beginning to understand that protection from harmful chemicals in everyday products is equally important. For example: hormone disruptors in baby bottles, toxins in cleaning products and pesticides on strawberries. The good news is that you can do something today about these chemical hazards in your homes, and be, as my grandmother often said, “better safe than sorry.” There are many easy nontoxic solutions and precautionary measures (like that bike helmet) to prevent harm and ensure a safer, cleaner and healthier future for your children.

And remember, no one can do everything but you can do something. Your children, your family and your planet will all thank you.

1. Eat intelligently. Organic foods are the best investment you can make for your child’s health. They can be more nutritious, sourced closer to home and are typically in season, but can cost a bit more. Prioritize wisely. Pediatrician Dr. Alan Greene recommends purchasing varieties of these organic foods in order to most effectively reduce chemical exposures: milk, potatoes, peanut butter, baby foods, ketchup, apples, beef, soy and corn.

2. Drink plenty of pure water. Bottled water is completely passé. It’s overpriced, unsustainably overpackaged, and not necessarily cleaner than regular tap water. Invest in a water filter (a simple pitcher option is fine) and a reusable stainless steel water bottle. Over time you’ll really see a big savings, plus you’ll be keeping countless plastic bottles out of landfills and oceans.

3. Embrace natural beauty. Ever read the chemical ingredients list on your shampoo or lotion? Not an easy task. Sixty percent of what goes on the skin is absorb into the body – so avoiding chemicals here is super important, especially for pregnant moms. You will reduce your family’s chemical exposure by opting for products made with natural and organic ingredients, like those from Care (Stella McCartney), California Baby, Perfect Organics, Aveda or Dr. Hauschka. Or you can even make your own! For a rich body moisturizer, combine ½ cup coconut oil with a ¼ cup cocoa butter and a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Protect your baby’s skin with a little olive oil, which also prevents rashes on his bum. At the first signs of redness, bathe your baby in warm water with a little baking soda or apply a small amount of aloe vera gel.

4.. Detox your nest. Home cleaning products often have harsh chemical ingredients that require words like “warning” or “danger” on the label - totally at odds with maintaining a healthy home. Safely opt for effective, nontoxic cleaning products for laundry, surface, dish and bath – many are no more expensive than their conventional counterparts. I’m a fan of 7th Generation. Or go old school and clean the way our grandparents did with common kitchen ingredients. Baking soda is great for scouring. White vinegar diluted with water magically cleans windows and countertops (killing bacteria and odors, as well). The acid in lemon juice fights grease and mineral scum.

5. Breathe clean air. Many people associate the smell of bleach or synthetic air fresheners with cleanliness. But, the smell of clean is actually scent-free. According to the U.S. EPA, indoor air is typically two to five times more polluted than outdoor air, and most people spend 90 percent of their time indoors. In addition to using nontoxic cleaning products, just opening your windows for a few minutes every day to let in some fresh air will do wonders. Vacuum regularly with a HEPA filtered vacuum. Growing houseplants also helps filter and detoxify your air while bringing a bit of the outdoors in. Turn on the exhaust fan or open the window when showering and cooking at the stovetop with gas. Remember to clean and replace your heating and AC filters regularly – these trap the germs and chemicals you don’t want recirculated in your home.

6. Take playtime back to the basics. Having a child shouldn’t mean turning your whole house into a toy box. Kids are better off without piles of plastic play things, battery powered gizmos and all sorts of complicated gadgets that profess to make them smarter. Simplicity is better for your child’s imagination, intellect and health – and, yes, much better for the planet. Stick to toys made from natural materials like solid wood and organic textiles, and opt for nontoxic art supplies and recycled paper. Use items you already own as playthings, like cookware drums or sock puppets, and visit our website (www.healthychild.org) for a quick video on how to make homemade play dough.

7. Ban bugs and whack weeds using common sense instead of chemicals. Pesticides are harsh poisons designed to kill rodents, bugs and weeds. Pesticide residues can end up on your grass, in your home and eventually on your child’s hands (which every parent knows will end up in his or her mouth). Prevent pests by keeping your home clean and removing their source of food. Distilled white vinegar will eliminate any weed. Be sure to wipe your feet on a doormat, or better yet, remove your shoes at the door to prevent tracking in dirt, dust, grime and other contaminants like lead or pesticides (and clean less!).

8. Go on a diet. I don’t mean cutting calories, but rather a diet from stuff. Reduce consumption. In the US, 90 percent of purchases end up in the trash within six months. We’re all familiar with the mantra “reduce, reuse, recycle” and while most people have embraced recycling, reducing is the first and best step. And it means saving money. You will also reduce your children’s exposure to unnecessary chemicals, consume less of the earth’s resources, and decrease the amount of pollution generated by manufacturing and disposing of all the stuff your family uses. Convert the money you save from scaling back on the purchases toward investments in the higher ticket green items like organic food, sustainable clothing and healthy furnishings.

9. Reuse, reclaim, repurpose, recreate, rethink. In the same vein as above, consider buying the things you need from secondhand stores, designer consignment shops, Craigslist, Etsy and eBay. You can host your own “swap your swag” night with your friends, or look for items on FreeCycle or similar swapping services. One person’s trash is another’s treasure, right? Give something old a new look with organic textiles or no-VOC paints and stains. For older children’s items, look into the latest safety standards and recalls at CPSC.gov.

10. Spread the word. Now that you have some information, inspire and empower others in your tribe. They will appreciate the information if you offer it as a good friend and parental ally. And if you are like me – unrelentingly self-critical – give yourself a break and know that each small step will help your family.

Hmm... fresh air in Hong Kong? Doubt it! And less consumption, that is a bit hard! Great articles! Great website too! Don't you love Gwyneth even more now?

Pimp My Crib

What's exciting about preparing for baby's birth is the decoration of baby's nursery. Of course it helps to find out the gender of the baby first before decorating. Or if you would like to be surprised, a unisex theme would be appropriate.

I knew I was having a daughter before giving birth but she was sharing her room with her older brother (who visits us twice a year from Paris). So pink was definitely a no-no! We had to get a bunk bed to save some space (brother on top and lil baby's crib was underneath). At first, I freaked out about the stability of the bed and was afraid big brother might just fall on her one day. Good thing, it turned out well.

We went to Ikea for some accents and got a cute sun-shaped lamp for the ceiling. We also found a wooden drawer which my hubby painted into bright orange and gold. Neat huh?

My hubby did the painting of the whole room himself and chose powder blue.. the kind of blue that's okay for girls! He also made a stencil of a giraffe, and painted it gold on the wall. (He was supposed to paint more animals but got lazy! Boo!). Then, we got some nautical- striped curtains from a store in Wanchai to match the walls.

I picked animals as her theme for the beddings from Mothercare and got her a mobile from Fisher Price in Toys R Us in Tsimshatsui. The room looked like a lil sailboat/ mini zoo. Tada! The nursery is done.

Some cute celeb nurseries:

For baby girl (Jessica Alba's nursery for Honor Marie):

For baby boy (Christina Aguilera's nursery for Max):

For twins (J.Lo's nursery for Max and Emme):

For more ideas for baby nursery designs, check out Target (love the stuff by Cynthia Rowley, DwellStudio), Ikea if you are on a budget. There's also my fave Pottery Barn Kids and Baby Gap Home. Or Posh Tots and Jack and Jill interiors (celebrity nursery designer) if you don't mind spending a lot. Just don't paint your nursery black ala Gwen Stefani for baby Zuma. Have fun!
