Family Affair
I wrote about how there were not enough parks in Hong Kong where I can stroll around with baby. Well, for the last two weeks I have been to Victoria Park and the Zoological/Botanical Garden near Pacific Place. So, I take it back, there are a few places for baby to be surrounded by grass (and monkeys for that matter).
Nothing beats going to the park with some friends and their babies... which is what I did today. Kids enjoyed playing with each other while the parents were chatting away. We ended our afternoon by having a bite at the Thai Restaurant in Hong Kong Park. What a pretty decent day for friends I used to go clubbing with! That's what happens when babies are born (which is a good thing)! A glass of wine in the afternoon suddenly replaced the usual binge drinking of Johnnie Walker at Kee. (Although I admit, that there are nights when we still need to party!)
Seeing other friends and families is very healthy for new Moms. Forget about the Annerley sessions in Central where you compare babies and share tips on breastfeeding. For expats who don't have families around, having a support group is really important. I'm just lucky that most of my friends have babies too, really makes my life easier. Do I sound sentimental and mushy? Must be the wine talking now.
For those who just moved here and have no friends yet, Hong Kong (no matter how cold it seems) is filled with lots of people who are friendly and open-minded. When I moved here three years ago, I could count the number of friends with one hand and the acquaintances grew depending on the number of times I've been to Volar, Dragon-I and Drop! But, after going through several ups and downs in this fast-paced and challenging city, real friends do shine through... and you can start calling this manic place, your new home.
Whether or not, we are staying in Hong Kong for good, that I do not know! But friendships we have made here are good enough to be called family, no matter where we end up...
